15-year record in trademark applications - What the OVI data show for 2024

Interest in trademark registration in Greece is on the rise, according to official data from the Industrial Property Organisation (OVI). According to the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dimitris Chronis, the number of applications in 2024 reached 7,000 - the highest level in the last 15 years and a clear continuation of the positive trend of 2023, when 6,449 applications were filed.

Chronis pointed out that this increase serves as an indication of a healthier and more dynamic business environment. The brand, he stressed, is a critical tool for economic development, influencing the strategy of businesses, the value of their products and services, extroversion and job creation. For this reason, the number of deposits reflects the real economic activity of the country.

The upward trend in recent years can be attributed to two main factors: increased business mobility and the improved functioning of the trademark system. Since 2022, when the OBI took over the responsibility of maintaining the trademark file, procedures have accelerated dramatically and the quality of service has improved significantly. The easy and affordable national filing procedure seems to attract the majority of interested parties, despite the parallel possibility of obtaining a European trademark directly.

OBI believes that this positive performance is a vote of confidence by the public in the intellectual property system as a reliable means of protecting intangible assets. Looking ahead to 2025, the organisation expects even greater growth, while continuing its awareness-raising activities on the importance of trademark registration and the continuous upgrading of its services.
